Connecting CERN to the communities that surround it
The Local Outreach section works to cultivate the trust, understanding and partnerships that underpin CERN's social licence to operate and evolve. By making CERN's scientific endeavours accessible and relevant to the people who live around it, creating tangible opportunities for engagement, and fostering meaningful dialogue, we help ensure that CERN's global scientific ambitions remain firmly connected to local communities that host it. We strive to build a future in which neighbouring communities—whether long-standing or newly engaged—are genuine partners in CERN's mission.
The Local Outreach section is organised around four pillars:
-
Local Communication — Ensuring transparent, accessible, and timely communication about CERN's activities, achievements, and plans, tailored to local audiences.
- Public Events — Organising and supporting events that demystify particle physics, celebrate scientific progress, and foster pride in hosting CERN.
-
Local Education Programmes — Developing and delivering educational initiatives for local schools, teachers, and students to inspire the next generation of scientists and to nurture informed, engaged citizens.
-
Civil Society Dialogue — Acting as a bridge between CERN and residents, businesses, community groups, and NGOs to address concerns, gather feedback, and collaborate on shared challenges.
